Rachel
Major: Allied Health: Major
Interning at Red Cross Hospital: Red Cross Hospital is the largest Pediatric Health Facility on the African Continent. She will have an opportunity to work with Prof. Rode, the Emeritus Head of Surgery as well as the Nutrition Department at the hospital. She will also be able to accompany Prof. Rode to community health facilities.

Katherine
Major: English/Human Rights
Interning at Black Sash: Black Sash is one of the foremost Human Rights organizations in South Africa and has a long history of resisting Apartheid. She will be working on a particular human rights issue in the organization’s provincial office.

Leah
Major: Political Science
Interning at Thandokulu Senior Secondary School: Thandokulu is a high school consisting of Xhosa speaking children coming mainly from Khayelitsha, the biggest black township in Cape Town. She will be teaching English and will be working with the Head of that department

Michelle
Major: Anthropology/Women’s Studies
Interning at Gender Dynamix: Gender DynamiX is a Human Rights organisation promoting freedom of expression of gender identity and advocating for the rights of Transgender, Transexual and Gender Non-Conforming people. Gender DynamiX is committed to provide resources, information and support to trans folk, their partners, family, employers and the public.

Major: Agriculture/ Natural Resources/
Women’s Studies Minor
Interning at the University of the Western Cape Gender Equity Unit: The organization is one of the leading advocates for gender justice in South Africa. It is very active in the area of prevention of violence against women, addressing particularly the attitudes of men. She will have an opportunity to help plan and conduct workshops to this effect.

Interning at Christel House School: The school focuses on children from extremely impoverished areas around the City of Cape Town. In this respect the school has become a model in its work with children who ordinarily would not have a fighting chance in life. She will be working with teachers in the pre-school/ kindergarden department.

Brett
Major: Cognitive Science
Interning at Cape Town Refugee Centre: The Centre is integrally involved with the plight of refugees coming mainly from Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia. Foreign nationals have become one of the most stigmatized and harassed as the poor fight for scarce resources. He will work on a particular issue affecting refugees.

Major: Political Science and Journalism
Interning at Black Sash: Black Sash is one of the foremost Human Rights organizations in South Africa and has a long history of resisting Apartheid. He will be working with a member of the staff in the national office where he will be helping them with a particular human rights policy issue.

Major: Sociology and International Relations
Interning at Christel House School: The school focuses on children from extremely impoverished areas around the City of Cape Town. Interning at the Cape Argus Newspaper: The paper is part of the Independent Newspaper Group and has the widest evening circulation in the city. She may have the opportunity to work with the political editor or reporter.
